acutally, i had to fix something like this for another project i'm
working on at ANL.  I cooked up a configure test that should add the
magic flags to CFLAGS.   It needs a bit more testing, but we're
going to add this to ROMIO and PVFS.  

Thanks for reminding me about the O_LARGEFILE option, though... i
always forget about that one.
