As Nathan mentioned, sometimes strange things can happen when you try
to execute or compile stuff on a pvfs filesystem.  

In this particular case, however, it looks like you have data files on
your system w/o corresponding metadata files.  When a new file is
created, it might be finding these orphaned data files and saving
them.
