About 4 years ago I measured VFS performance with static, mapped and
dynamic buffer modes. Those pages were hosted on my old employers
site and I no longer have access to them, but they showed 'dynamic'
has a slight performance edge over the other two. In some
configurations, 'dynamic' does not work well with highmem enabled.

Glad you figured out the problem!
