Right now the distribution is random among all configured metadata
servers.  Round-robin was used in the past by the client sysint but we
didn't have a standard way of selecting which metadata server to
'start' on (So for each run in the system the 'start' server was
always the same making it rather bloated compared to the other
metadata servers).  Our system is flexible and this can be changed
rather easily if you're interested in more complicated or balanced
metadata distributions.
