Great.  That'll be a little easier to debug with the kernel module
out of the way.  If you could send me the log for doing the slow
pvfs2-cp or pvfs2-ls (or both, but not more than that in the log
file), that would be great.

Another data point, if it is easy for you to setup:  are things just
as slow using bmi_tcp rather than bmi_ib?
