Let me try this again since my last message was too big:

Somewhere in this patch
[ http://www.mcs.anl.gov/~robl/pvfs2/5562.patch ] is something that
causes the append test to fail on lain.  I don't see anything in this
patch that does anything to the O_APPEND case in file.c but maybe I'm
missing something.  

What I mean to say is that the error might not be related to 64 bit
handles, but it's definitely related to something in this patch set.
