2.6.24.3-12.fc8 was giving errors in dmesg:

sysctl_check_dir: failed: /pvfs2 .1 ref: /kernel .1
sysctl table check failed: /pvfs2 .1 Inconsistent directory names

explicitly initializing .ctl_name to zero made those warnings go away,
but maybe what you are telling me is that it's coincidence...

no argument from me on that one. happy to come up with an ifdef free
