Hi Christina. This falls in my court, but I haven't had a chance to
look at it yet. 

this requires multiple servers but only a single client.  Do you have
a libpvfs2.a with debugging symbols enabled?  you could break on
PVFS_sys_create and verify that attribs.dfile_count is set to what you
expect.
