Nope there is no space left neither for expansion cards nor for extra
disks, so I cannot add any internal or external storage to the
servers. I will need to do some network stuff, NBD is the best option
as I see it, it should also be fairly well tested.

It has been a long time since I checked the PVFS2 code, but would it
not be possible to do some restructuring of the existing data (in
petal/RAID rebuild style) ? - i.e. run some job that redistribute the
existing data across the new server layout ?, this will of cause
degrade the I/O while redistributing, but to me this is a better
option than creating some crazy NBD hack.
