Thanks for all this research. I'm sure that RobL will get back to you on 
the other parts; there was one thing in here that I didn't understand:

Are you saying that the system didn't have enough free disk space? What 
happens in the OpenMPI case in this event? Surely the test shouldn't 
complete successfully...
