Phil pointed out that this problem is probably related to something
Sam found back in December:

Sam and Phil have fixed this I think.  Can you try the pvfs-2-7-branch
version of PVFS and see if the kernel behaves better?   I can send you
a patch relative to pvfs-2.7.0 if that's easier for you.
