I've just tested with pvfs 2.8.1, 64 bits server and 32 bits NFS
client, it worked perfectly fine, and I even successfully ran bonnie++
on the NFS shared PVFS filesystem.

Setup :

PVFS node / NFS server  2.6.27.39 x86_64 (debian)
client  2.6.29.6 i386 (slackware)

What about giving 2.8.1 a try?
